The Graduate School "Materials for Solar Energy Conversion (MatSEC)" is looking for:
PhD Student (f/m)Kennziffer: EM 2018/13
MatSEC is a member of Dahlem Research School (DRS), which provides a structured graduate education at Freie University Berlin.
MatSEC combines experiment and theory in the areas of material science, crystallography, solid state physics, solid state chemistry, and scientific computing to develop structure-property relations which allow for the design of custom-made materials for solar energy conversion.
Topic of the doctoral thesis:
Phase Relations in Zn-Group IV-nitrides wide gap semiconductors
Wide band gap zinc-group IV-nitrides are an intriguing novel field at the forefront of science in solar energy research, which could combine the advantages of group III-group V semiconductors with the need for earth abundant and less-toxic materials.
TasksThe research will focus on the successful synthesis of bulk-materials and their thorough characterisation through various techniques, such as powder diffraction, thermal analysis, electron microscopy and spectroscopic methods.
The ultimate target is to establish a comprehensive knowledge on chemical substitutions in the multinary phase system and their structural and electronic consequences to allow the targeted synthesis of optimised materials with tailored properties.
- Completed master’s degree in chemistry, physics, physical chemistry or materials science
- Good knowledge on chemical growth processes and in solid state chemistry
- Strong motivation in research
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English
