Doctoral Student (f/m/d) in the Field of Time- and Energy-Resolved Spectroscopy of Liquids

Reference No.: PS 2024/7

At the Institute for Electronic Structure Dynamics (Institute for Electronic Structure Dynamics - Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin [HZB] [helmholtz-berlin.de]), we develop spectroscopic methods that allow real-time and/or site-specific investigations of condensed-phase physicochemical transformations. Our Ultrafast Laser Laboratory for Applied Sciences (ULLAS) (Ultrafast Laser Laboratory for Applied Sciences (ULLAS) Group - Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin [HZB] [helmholtz-berlin.de]) and Liquid & Interfacial Dynamics with Ultrafast X-Rays (LIDUX) (Liquid & Interfacial Dynamics with Ultrafast X-Rays (LIDUX) Group - Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin [HZB] [helmholtz-berlin.de]) facilities are used to investigate physicochemical changes in the liquid phase and at interfaces on their natural femtosecond time scales. The principal goals of the laboratories are to better understand the mechanisms of (bio)chemical processes in aqueous solutions and the activity of catalysts and functional materials in their natural or applied environments.

Your focus will be on developing a molecular perspective of how ultrafast energy, charge, and mass transfer processes occur after photoexcitation of (bio)chemically relevant aqueous solutions. These processes will be studied using time-resolved photoemission and absorption spectroscopy on liquid microjets. Research will primarily be conducted at the institute's state-of-the-art, ultrashort pulse laser facilities, where complementary laser-driven X-Ray (High Harmonic Generation) sources are available, covering the spectral range up to the water window region, specifically from a few tens to over 550 eV. The laboratory experiments will be complemented by additional measurements at accelerator-based X-Ray sources (at synchrotron and XFEL facilities). Your research will take place in close collaboration with researchers at the Fritz Haber Institute (Berlin, Germany) and the University of Ottawa (Ottawa, Canada).
